There
is sufficient evidence to suggest that the healing properties
of herbs was recognized and appreciated by almost every
great civilization of the world even in ancient times.
Today there are many herbs that contribute to healing
and have been seen to possess great medicinal value and
curative properties. For example there are specific herbs
for depression, herbs for diabetes, anxiety herbs and
even weight loss herbs. In India, the medicinal worth
of herbs has even been chronicled in some great works
of ancient literature. Writings in the Rigveda, the Athamaveda
and in books on the subject of Ayurveda reveal that the
ancient Indian people recognized and cherished the medicinal
worth of herbs.
But Indians were not alone in their recognition of the
healing properties of herbs. Ancient Chinese civilizations
have also got records to show that that culture had also
devised a method of healing using herbal concoctions.
And with modern society fast gaining an understanding
of the dangers that are associated with modern chemical-based-medications,
the ancient practice of herbal medicine is gaining importance
all around the world in modern times.
It is not uncommon to associate the cure for diseases
like diabetes and herbs but in modern times, herbs are
also being used in applications like cosmetics. Herbal
teas are also immensely popular and often such teas are
believed to be infused with the healing properties of
certain herbs. The idea is to take the particular herb
and have it react actively within the patient's body -
the mode of delivering the herb within the body is not
fixed and one can choose whether he or she prefers to
take the herb in the form of medicine, tea or food. In
order for the herb to take the necessary effect, one must
only ensure that the herb is definitely absorbed by the
body.
Most herbs have no harmful side-effects but some may lead
to other unwanted reactions in the case of certain people.
For instance, some people may not be able to tolerate
the herb or have an allergy to it. Chinese herbal medicines
employ the combination of four or more herbs to ensure
that the concoction does not have any unwanted side-effects
and the mixture would contain herbs to combat such effects.
Indian herbal medicine does not provide for such contingencies
but this is probably why Indian herbal medicine doses
are always started off in small portions. Once the specialist
sees how the body reacts to the introduction of the herb
into the system, then he or she can decide how to pursue
the matter from that point on. Accordingly, the herbal
specialist may decide to increase, decrease or rectify
the dosage of the herbal brew or its contents to meet
his patient's needs.
In the area of healing herbs hypertension is also one
of the common conditions that herbal doctors have to treat
but in the case of such conditions that can be serious,
it is crucial that the patient refer to the opinion of
a doctor too.
