People,
the world-over, have grown sensible to the health-hazards
that chemical fertilizers and treatments pose. Therefore
organic herbs and spices are those which have not been
grown using any chemicals and hence offer the consumer
a healthier alternative to using chemically-treated food
products. Such awareness has also led to the preference
for non-gmo organic herbs or herbs that are not genetically
modified. Many people choose to grow organic medicinal
herbs and mushrooms on their own. This serves as a hobby,
makes their culinary or medicinal herb available to them
as and when they like and also assures them of their crop's
organic quality. To start growing your herbs, you should
first decide where to have your herb garden and what size
it will be. Next, you need to decide on which herbs to
grow there and plan an herb garden layout accordingly.
There are a vast variety of herbs to choose from and one
can decide to grow wild organic herbs, a vast variety
of edible herbs or even Ayurveda organic herbs if one
pleases but factors like sunshine, weather and drainage,
all play an important part in the success of an herbal
garden hence you must keep these in mind.
If you buy organic herbs online or whether you choose
to buy organic herb seeds to start with, you must make
it a point to gather all the information you can about
the kind of herbs you want to plant in your garden. Here
are a few basic guidelines you need to follow to have
a successful organic herb garden.
The first thing to remember is to plant your herbs in
an area where they will receive adequate sunlight. Most
herbs require at least half a day of sunlight to grow
well. Next, remember to plant them in organic soil in
pots or in garden beds with mixed flowers growing in them.
Next, plant your herbs according to your pre-decided garden
layout. This is important and you must ensure that you
separate the annual herbs from biannual or perennial herbs.
This makes it easy for you to remember to plant your annual
or bi-annual herbs during the right season. If you have
chosen to grow some very difficult herbs like lavender
for example, you should opt to plant them in pots so that
you can move them around your garden and alter the weather
conditions in order to be most conducive to their growth.
It helps to mix different varieties of herbs together
when you plant them though as the complicated varieties
placed together make things complicated for insects and
hence prevent pest-infestation. For instance, you could
try planting herbs like parsley and chives in the same
area with one parsley herb right next to a chive one.
You should also use natural fertilizers like compost or
manure when you plant your herbs. In addition you can
add your natural fertilizer to the water when watering
your plants but do not over-fertilize or over-water culinary
herbs as they may lose their flavor.
